Parents

Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about the warning signs of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Signs in youth are often missed and usually dismissed entirely in order to keep participating in physical activities. There are a number of things to keep in mind when you believe there may be a risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Some items are listed below:

Encourage youth to know their limits.

There is often internal pressure, pressure from teammates, coaches, parents, etc. to “suck it up”. There can be deadly consequences if youth do not take a break when needed. Any complaints of feeling dizzy, headaches, shortness of breath, or “heart flutters” should be taken seriously and further evaluated.

Become AED/CPR certified.

Having AED/CPR training is valuable. The training will prepare you with the basic information and skills necessary to intervene in the event of an emergency.

Volunteer.

Many leagues, especially recreational leagues, are in need of volunteers to coach, keep an eye on youth, run concessions, etc. Extra consideration should be given if you are, or plan to become, AED/CPR certified. Having more certified volunteers present increases the likelihood an individual will survive if an SCA should occur. Ask your league administrator how you can get involved, and be sure to mention you are AED/CPR certified if applicable.

Consider.

Administering a shock to children 8 and younger requires specialized equipment and/or training. Most AED response kits come with pediatric pads that automatically reduce the power of a shock, and show you how to position the pads if pediatric pads are not available. Take a moment to think about whether or not your rec league, school, church group, etc. has access to, or knowledge of, these scenarios and encourage them to apply for the program if they do not. This article will tell you more about how and when to use an AED.
